What does Tree to Be do?

Tree to Be is a driver of innovative, creative and inspiring solutions around biodiversity restoration, improvement of the living environment and climate adaptation.

Tree to Be develops in particular concepts and programs to create awareness about the importance of reforestation and other methods for greening our living environment. Companies and organizations can achieve practical, inspiring and effective impact in the context of their sustainability agenda or strategy.

Why Tree to Be?

The initiators of Tree to Be have extensive experience with sustainable themes such as CO2 compensation, climate issues, trends and developments, and in particular forest protection and forest projects worldwide. They also have knowledge and experience from the business & corporate field. Despite the increasing support and urgency for climate action, a lot of work still needs to be done to make people and organizations aware of the problem and more importantly: the solutions.

An additional problem here is that many people and organizations no longer see the forest for its trees. This is a consequence of the multitude of opinions, visions, directions and solutions that are offered. However, the fact is that natural ecosystems are the basis of our existence and that biodiversity plays a key role in this. Tree to Be therefore wants to contribute in a positive, simple and inspiring way to increasing awareness about the added value of trees and forests in all facets of our society and ensure together that deforestation is converted into reforestation.

Almost everyone feels the urgency of climate change and the fact that we have to do something together. One of the things that directly affects us is the fact that biodiversity is disappearing: for every tree that is planted, two more disappear. And this includes all the beautiful, large-scale initiatives to plant trees.

Worldwide we are dealing with approximately two billion hectares of degraded land. That is twice the surface of Europe. By degraded land we mean extremely dry areas, depleted soils and damaged land as a result of unsustainable land use, raw material extraction and deforestation. We find these grounds not only in distant tropical areas, but also closer to home. Think of Portugal, Spain – and also the Netherlands.

Trees and forests play an important role in maintaining biodiversity, a healthy living environment, and counteracting the negative effects of climate change. They provide us with air, water and nutrition. They reduce particulate matter, prevent erosion, use CO2 for their growth and cool the environment and thus the planet. No wonder that climate scientists have increasingly come to understand the importance of trees and forests.

Trees and forests can also play an important role in a circular economy, sustainable agriculture and making the land resilient to changing weather patterns.

What can I do as a company or organization with Tree to Be?

Suppose you want to show as an organization that you genuinely work on sustainability. You take corporate social responsibility seriously and you attach importance to a sustainable world. Then of course you would also like to share this with your employees, partners and customers. And thereby also inspire them to take care of nature, the environment and the climate.

Companies and organizations looking for a practical, tangible and inspiring interpretation of their sustainability agenda or strategy can turn to Tree to Be to work on reforestation, climate adaptation and a future-proof living environment. Above all, we realize that a sustainable action must fit your company or organization, and together with you we also provide an inspiring way of communication.

How can I, as an individual, contribute to the activities of Tree to Be?

As an individual you can easily contribute with a donation. You can make a one-off or periodic donation to the trees. The foundation also works with volunteers. If you want to help spreading our story or contribute to the growth of this initiative, you can also contact us. Vacancies are also regularly posted.

How do you ensure that trees are planted?

You cannot plant trees just anywhere. You want them to have the effect we want. So that they not only provide nutrition, beauty and shade, but so that they also contribute optimally to the cooling and moistening of the earth. Every country, region, project is different and requires different things. The costs of planting, the tree species and the survival chances of a tree also vary per project.

To ensure that funds are spent in the best possible way with the greatest impact, we carefully select projects and work with the most experienced technical partners. For example, we work together with Face the Future, Borgman Beheer and Africa Wood Grow. These respected organizations have years of knowledge and experience with the technical side of forest projects.

Is it possible to offset my CO2 emissions with trees?

There are many factors that have an effect on CO₂ sequestration. For example, which trees and other vegetation have been planted, which soil type, which location, etc. A forest in tropical areas, for example, usually stores more CO2 than a forest in Europe. We can, however, assume that an average (adult) tree in the Netherlands sequesters about 20-25 kg per year.

The simple answer is that it is possible to contribute to CO2 compensation with trees. In specific cases the use of emission certificates (CO2 or carbon credits) could be a solution.

At Tree to Be, we assume an average sequestration capacity of 20-25 kg per adult tree, and an average CO2 sequestration of 10 tons per hectare.

Is it possible to visit these forests?

Definitely! Almost all areas can be visited freely. The forests in the Netherlands to which we contribute are areas accessible to the public. The many hiking trails offer ample opportunity to enjoy the surroundings.
